Community invited to virtual town halls on the West Maui Community Plan update
LAHAINA, Hawaii—Councilmember Tamara Paltin announced she will host a virtual town hall on the long-awaited final phase of the West Maui Community Plan update tomorrow at 5 p.m. and Jan. 30 at 10 a.m.
The plan has been reviewed by the West Maui Community Plan Advisory Committee and the Maui Planning Commission, and the update process culminates with discussion and adoption of the final plan by the council. Intended to provide a long-range guide for values and goals in West Maui, the plan was last updated in 1996.
“As chair of the Planning and Sustainable Land Use Committee for the last two years, my staff and I have closely followed the update process,” said Paltin, who holds the council seat for the West Maui resident area. “I have tremendous respect for the commitment and dedication our community volunteers have shown in advancing the plan to this point.”
“I hope to be able to expedite the review of the plan by taking it up as soon as our committee begins its work this term.”
Paltin said the town halls are an early opportunity for the public to learn more and give input on the draft plan. Representatives of the Planning Department and other officials will also be participating in the events, which will include presentations on:
–the community plan updating process and purpose,
–tips for navigating the wearemaui.org website,
–how to review the draft plan and provide feedback, and
–the benefits of adopting the plan before the budget session.
Following the presentations, there will be time for Q&A and discussion, Paltin said.
“The West Maui Community Plan will guide what future growth should look like over the next 20 years, including development, transportation systems, parks and infrastructure,” said Paltin. “All members of the community are invited to attend, and I especially encourage West Maui residents to take part.”
