On Friday, June 20, 2014, the Maui County Council congratulated the Seabury Hall Track and Field Team on winning the 2014 Island Movers State Championship.
Below is the contents of the resolution:
CONGRATULATING THE SEABURY HALL GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD TEAM FOR WINNING THE 2014 ISLAND MOVERS STATE TRACK AND
FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
WHEREAS, on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Kamehameha Schools Kapalama on Oahu, Seabury Hall’s girls track and field team captured the 2014 Island Movers State Track and Field Championships; and
WHEREAS, in a David and Goliath-style battle, Seabury Hall, a school made up of only 259 high school students, dominated the competition statewide, and was able to unseat five-time girls State champion, Punahou School, a school made up of 1,729 high school students; and
WHEREAS, the lady Spartans earned a team point total of 73, 35 more than the second-place finisher, making them the first Maui Interscholastic League team to win a girls track and field State title; and
WHEREAS, the girls track and field team was led by seniors Dakota Grossman and Alyssa Bettendorf along with team members Ava Shipman, Kiana Smith, Christy Fell, Ally Smith, Amy Ozee, and Ellie Bega; and coach Bobby Grossman; and
WHEREAS, Ozee won the girls high jump gold, while Bettendorf became the first Maui Interscholastic League girl to ever triple in the sprints by winning the 100, 200, and 400-meter races, and the first girl in the State to do so since 2002; and
WHEREAS, Grossman claimed her fourth State title in the 3,000-meter event, and her second crown in the 1,500-meter event, finishing her high school career with ten State gold medals; and
WHEREAS, the exceptional performance, dedication, and team spirit of Seabury Hall’s girls track and field team have brought pride and honor to the people of Maui County; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the County of Maui:
1. That it hereby congratulates the Seabury Hall girls track and field team on winning the 2014 Island Movers State Track and Field Championships; and
2. That certified copies of this resolution be transmitted to team members Dakota Grossman, Alyssa Bettendorf, Ava Shipman, Kiana Smith, Ally Smith, Christy Fell, Amy Ozee, and Ellie Bega; Seabury Hall Girls Track and Field Head Coach, Bobby Grossman; Seabury Hall Athletic Director, Robert Dougherty; Seabury Hall Headmaster, Joseph Schmidt; Maui Interscholastic League Executive Director, Joe Balangitao Jr.; Hawaii High School Athletic Association Executive Director, Christopher Chun; and the Honorable Alan M. Arakawa, Mayor, County of Maui.
