At the Budget and Finance Committee today, Council members submitted their proposed version of the fiscal year 2015 budget to Committee Chair Mike White for review.
I have put a lot of thought and consideration into my proposal.
Property valuations have increased, resulting in over $20 million dollars revenue at current tax rates. The Mayor’s proposal increases current tax rates by 6.5 percent and adds another $15 million to his budget.
In addition to eliminating the mayor’s 6.5 percent increase, I have also chosen to reduce the taxpayer’s rate and make cuts to the general fund by over $18 million. I have also reduced Capital Improvement Projects by $9 million.
I feel that it is my obligation to the taxpayers of Maui County to be fiscally responsible.
I would like to thank the committee and staff for their guidance and hard work.
I appreciate your consideration.
White said he will review proposals over the weekend and present a version to the committee Monday, April 28 at 9 a.m. in the Council Chamber.
