Design and development principles highlighted in Lanai Community Plan
WAILUKU, Hawaii – The Planning Committee will meet at the Lanai Community Center on Tuesday, June 23 at 6 p.m. to receive comments about revisions proposed in the Lanai Community Plan, Committee Chair Don Couch announced today.
Couch proposed language in the plan to highlight the preservation of Lanai’s scenic sites and resources.
“It was clear residents wanted to preserve Lanai’s scenic landscapes and character,” Couch said. “The committee’s challenge is to make sure policies are in place to address Lanai’s projected growth in 20 years, without losing its distinct country-town charm.”
The plan also outlines important actions and strategies for the community such as to explore options for alternate access in and out of Manele during emergencies.
Language added to the plan describes the general intent of proposed development to diversify the island’s economy: “Future development is anticipated to create more business and job opportunities both within and outside the tourism industry.”
Couch said future projects such as resort development plans and affordable housing construction are relying on the expansion of water sources.
Urban and rural design principles were also included in the proposed revisions available online at MauiCounty.us/LanaiCommunityPlan.
“I look forward to a productive meeting on Tuesday night and strongly encourage Lanaians to come out and offer their comments,” Couch said.
