About HSAC 2019
On behalf of the Maui County Council and the 2019 Hawai‘i State Association of Counties Conference Committee, we extend our sincere appreciation to all the participants, presenters, sponsors, and supporters of the 2019 HSAC Annual Conference held on June 9 – 12, 2019, at the Wailea Beach Resort – Marriott.
With over 50 distinguished guest speakers, 20 expert panels and keynotes, and cultural activities centering around the theme of Hot Topics in Sustainability, the conference offered an exciting array of networking and knowledge-sharing opportunities across disciplines, sectors and communities.
Conference Agenda & Activities
The Conference was organized into six tracks, focusing on collaborative and effective ways to address some of the most pressing issues statewide in the areas of:

SUSTAINABLE AG & LAND USE
WATER RESOURCES
HOUSING
COMMUNITY TRENDS
CLIMATE CHANGE
Topics included alternative energy, food security, coastal reef management, affordable housing best practices, invasive species, and sea level rise. Among the dynamic presenters were keynote speakers Mufi Hannemann, Honolulu Councilmember Joey Manahan, and climate change litigators Kate Sears and Alyssa Johl.
The conference also featured the first all-youth panel led by high school seniors and recent graduates, the launch of the Climate Reality Project – Hawaii Chapter, and a special Maui Film Festival screening of the documentary film, Beyond Climate.
The 2019 HSAC Annual Conference included a Welcome Reception and Dinner Luau with entertainment coordinated by the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, and featuring musician-activists George Kahumoku, Jr., Pat Simmons, Jr., and Henry Kapono.
Discounts on eco-tourism activities were provided by Maui Ocean Center, Wailea Golf Club, and Submerged Maui Escape Room. Additionally, Wailea Beach Resort – Marriott provided exclusive HSAC rates to conference guests.
