Special meeting scheduled Thursday to address governor’s emergency proclamation on homelessness
WAILUKU, Hawaii – A special Maui County Council meeting to address Gov. David Ige’s emergency proclamation on homelessness is scheduled on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 9 a.m., Council Chair Mike White announced today.
The meeting venue is the Council Chamber, eighth floor of the County Building, 200 S. High St., Wailuku.
The meeting agenda originally listed another venue. White said the meeting is being moved to the Council Chamber to accommodate meeting participants and attendees and to allow for testimony from the council offices in Hana, Lanai and Molokai.
The meeting was scheduled on the call of the mayor under privileges provided by Section 3-5.2 of the Maui County Charter.
“I appreciate the governor escalating the issue of homelessness to the attention of policymakers throughout the state, though it’s clear Maui County’s specific concerns are different than Oahu’s,” White said. “Community participation is critical to finding answers to this problem, so I urge the public to come and testify on Thursday.”
Ige on Oct. 16 formally proclaimed the State of Hawaii’s homelessness situation needs immediate attention and authorized emergency action, including the waiver of certain laws and the expenditure of state funds.
Ige’s proclamation estimated the number of homeless statewide to be 7,620. The estimated number of homeless on Maui County is 1,137, according to a report by the state Department of Human Services.
