The County Council’s Economic Development, Energy, Agriculture and Recreation Committee will consider a proposed resolution Tuesday authorizing the acceptance of a donation of a weather-protection tent cover for the Lahaina Aquatic Center. The meeting starts at 1:30 p.m.
The donation, valued at over $10,000, consists of a much-needed replacement cover for the existing tent frame, as well as the cost of installation. The Will Smith Foundation is the donor of this generous gift that will benefit the users of the West Maui aquatic facility by providing protection from the elements.
Founded by Susan Moulton, The Will Smith Foundation was established to honor the memory of her son Will, and exemplify his generous and vibrant spirit through charitable action. The foundation’s focus is on providing positive life experiences for children and their families.
Over the years, the foundation has supported numerous community events in Hawaii, Africa and Will’s home state of Texas – all places special to Will. It has also given grants to local organizations that provide opportunities for Maui County’s youth, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui, Best Buddies Maui, Hawaiian Canoe Club and Maui United Soccer Club.
In June 2013, the council adopted a resolution authorizing the acceptance of a donated Yamaha WaveRunner and rescue sled from The Will Smith Foundation, in conjunction with the inaugural “Will’s Water Day” event last summer. Waterman Hall of Famer Archie Kalepa and Maui County Fire Chief Jeff Murray demonstrated use of the equipment to approximately 300 keiki and guests eager to learn about ocean safety.

As chairman of the committee authorized to review donations that support park facilities and equipment, I stand ready to facilitate opportunities that enhance the ability of our community to experience and learn valuable life lessons through recreational activities. In this regard, I commend and thank Susan Moulton and The Will Smith Foundation for their generosity to the community and the County of Maui.
Join us in the Council Chambers on Tuesday, or watch the meeting live on Akaku TV Channel 53. We encourage the public’s feedback and comments on this proposed donation via testimony emailed to ear.committee@mauicounty.us. Remote testimony from Hana, Lanai and Molokai will also be accepted.
