Committee to visit proposed relocation sites for county service center
WAILUKU, Hawaii – On Monday, July 21, the Maui County Council’s Budget and Finance Committee will inspect two proposed sites for a new county service center in Central Maui, Committee Chair Mike White announced today.
Monday’s site inspection is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on the mauka end of the vacant lot located at Waiale Road and Kaupo Street, at the driveway entrance nearest to Foodland, in the Kehalani Village Center in Wailuku.
Property owner RCFC Kehalani is offering the sale of 5 acres for $6,561,630 and proposing to donate an additional 14.4 acres near the corner of Kuikahi Drive and Waiale Road in Wailuku.
At 10:30 a.m., the committee will re-assemble on the mauka side of Alaihi Street, located at Maui Business Park II in Kahului, to consider Alexander & Baldwin’s offer of 4 acres for $7,145,582, along with a donation of 35.6 acres of property in Paia.
The service center provides residents convenient means of accessing county services, including vehicle registration and real property tax. The county currently leases space for the center at Maui Mall.
“I believe the committee will receive a more complete picture by personally visiting the sites,” White said. “Two very good options are before us, but we must exercise our due diligence to ensure we pay a fair price and make the best long-term decision for residents.”
White encouraged interested members of the public to provide testimony at the site inspection meeting. Testimony may also be emailed to bf.committee@mauicounty.us, referencing BF-106.
The meeting agenda is available at www.mauicounty.gov/committees/bf.
