WAILUKU, Hawaii – Council Chair Mike White announced the Maui County Board of Ethics today approved his suggestion to make available online the lobbyist registration list for the County of Maui.
White was informed the list will be posted on the Board of Ethics website here.
White raised the issue in a newspaper column last month and supported the proposal by submitting testimony to the board today.
“Understanding who a testifier represents can help to determine how a piece of testimony is evaluated,” White said in his testimony. He also noted other jurisdictions post comprehensive lobbyist information online, including the State of Hawaii and the City and County of Honolulu.
A full copy of his testimony is below.
Maui County Code Section 2.56.040 requires lobbyists to fill a certified statement to the Board of Ethics. The full section follows:

A lobbyist shall report any change in information contained in the certified statement within ten days of such change. A lobbyist shall file a notice of termination within ten days of ceasing activity as a lobbyist. As used herein, “lobbyist” means any person who engages himself for pay or other consideration for the purpose of attempting to influence legislative or administrative action of the county.
