South Maui community townhall to be held June 27
KĪHEI, Hawaiʻi (June 13, 2024)—Councilmember Thomas Cook announced today he will host a South Maui community townhall June 27 at 6 p.m. at the Maui Economic Development Board’s Malcolm Center.
Cook said the meeting is in collaboration with county departments and other agencies to provide South Maui residents with updates on several policy objectives specific to the area. He said expected presenters include Maui Emergency Management Agency Administrator Amos Lonokailua-Hewett, Fire Chief Brad Ventura, representatives from Hawaiian Electric, the County of Maui’s Office of Economic Development, the County of Maui’s Office of Innovation and Sustainability and John Mathews, Assistant Director for Engineering for the Pacific Islands Area National Resources Conservation Service.
“I am grateful to the county departments and agencies for their willingness to provide information to the public in a community setting,” said Cook, who holds the seat for the South Maui residency area. “This townhall is a great way to create connections with community members, and I look forward to having more discussions on how to improve the quality of life in South Maui.”
Presenters will discuss updates from MEMA, fire-risk mitigation, flood-risk mitigation, HECO’s Public Safety Power Shutoff program and economic development. Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions during the townhall’s concluding Q-and-A session.
Cook said residents are also encouraged to submit townhall questions in advance via the townhall’s registration portal. Please RSVP at bit.ly/southmauitownhall.
All residents are welcome to attend the meeting with or without a reservation.
The Malcolm Center is located at 1305 N. Holopono St.
