Kīhei-Mākena housing project items pulled from agenda
WAILUKU, Hawaiʻi (Dec. 12, 2024)—Chair Alice L. Lee announced today that agenda items relating to Honuaʻula, a Kīhei-Mākena development project, will be canceled at tomorrow morning’s special council meeting due to a procedural requirement.
Lee said Bill 171 (2024) and Bill 172 (2024) would amend land-use and development standards for the 670-acre multi-use housing project. Tomorrow morning’s public hearing on the bills has also been canceled.
“The Department of Planning advised the council this week that the Maui Planning Commission inadvertently failed to fulfill a procedural requirement for Bills 171 and 172,” said Lee, who holds the seat for the Wailuku-Waiheʻe-Waikapū residency area. “The council will pause its consideration of the bills until the commission has conducted a public hearing in the South Maui community plan area, as required by the county code.”
With the cancellations, oral testimony will not be accepted on Committee Report 24-120, County Communications 24-30 -31, -32, and 33 or Bills 171 and 172. All remaining items on tomorrow’s council agenda will still be considered—which include second and final reading of proposed county ordinances.
