Council reelects Alice Lee as chair for 2025-2027 term
WAILUKU, Hawaiʻi (Jan. 2, 2025)— The Maui County Council held an organizational meeting this afternoon to elect its officers, adopt procedural rules and appoint staff for the 2025-2027 term, announced Councilmember Alice L. Lee—who was reappointed as council chair for the new term.
Lee said the council elected Councilmember Yuki Lei K. Sugimura as vice-chair and Councilmember Tasha Kama as presiding officer pro tempore. Sugimura and Kama held the same positions during the last council term, which ended at noon today.
“I would like to thank staff and my colleagues for a productive day and for the collaborative effort to ensure we are ready to work as soon as possible,” said Lee, who holds the seat for the Wailuku-Waiheʻe-Waikapū residency area. “With the entire council being reelected to serve another term, we are prepared to build upon the work that began last term and create more innovative legislation that provides solutions to our communities.”
Lee said councilmembers took the oath of office during an inauguration ceremony held at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in the morning. The ceremony was hosted by Dr. Lui Hokoana, University of Hawaii Maui College’s chancellor, and featured hula by Ka Malama Mahilani, led by Kumu Hula Cody Pueo Pata, and a keynote speech by Anica Ancheta, a 2024 Baldwin High School graduate who is now studying at Cal Tech.
