The Maui County Council will have its regular meeting on Thursday, July 25 at 9 a.m.
Three years ago, citing the dangers of distracted driving, the Council enacted an ordinance to ban operating a motor vehicle while using a mobile electronic device.
The three other Hawaii counties have similar ordinances.
On May 20, Gov. Abercrombie signed Act 74 (2013) into law, banning text messaging and the use of handheld phones while driving throughout the state. The statute took effect July 1: http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2013/bills/HB980_SD2_.htm
Maui County Council July 25 meeting
A bill proposed by the County of Maui Chief of Police would repeal Maui County’s ordinance because it’s apparently no longer necessary. The bill is expected to be referred to committee at Thursday’s Council meeting.
Other proposed measures to be reviewed by the Council include:
- A resolution granting a lease of County real property to Na Mamo O Mu’olea, a community group that is working in partnership with the County to preserve Mu’olea Point in Hana.
- A trio of bills introduced by Councilmember Robert Carroll relating to landscape planting and beautification. The first bill, known as the Tree Bill, would prohibit any person from removing, relocating, or replacing identified trees without a permit.
The Council will consider reports on forfeiture funds, compliance reports,
monthly source and groundwater use reports and awards for grants and contracts from County departments.

A bill to rename Waihee (Ball) Park to the Richard “Pablo” Caldito Park.

Bill 53 (2013)
A bill to codify and establish an existing crosswalk fronting Paia Elementary School and amend the description of the crosswalk fronting the Alfred “Flako” Boteilho, Sr. Gym to reflect current geographic references.
Bill 54 (2013)
A bill to update Title 18 of the Maui County Code, relating to Subdivisions, clarifying the Department of Public Works’ responsibility for subdivisions and updating the procedure for processing applications
Bill 55 (2013)
A bill granting a request from the Association of Apartment Owners of Wells Street Professional Center for a change in zoning from Residential to Business District for approximately 7,568 square feet of property as a parking lot;
